Classroom Spotlight for Week of September 26th - Mrs. Zumdahl, 6th Grade Math, FJH

September 19, 2016

Sixth grade math has made changes this year.  One change is that all sixth grade students spend 2 periods in math class.  This means they get math for over 80 minutes a day.  The first period is set up like a typical math class with a lesson.  The second period is when they get to practice what they learned and complete centers or projects.  Having 2 periods of math allows for deeper discussions and practice with the teacher rather than at home.

Another change is the curriculum that is being used.  We are spending more time modeling and looking for deeper understanding instead of just learning "how to do" the math.  This takes more time and thinking and is stretching some students outside of their comfort zones.
